Edinburgh at night – Jenners

Jenners is – was – an Edinburgh Institution. It was the country’s oldest independent department store, opening in the 1830s.  A little like Harrods, but with more Calvinism, more Miss Jean Brodie.

Sadly, bought by House of Fraser in 2005, and although the name was kept, it’s not really Jenners any more.

Architecturally it is lovely. The caryatids on the front of the store were designed symbolically to represent women as the “support of the house”. DSC_0090At night, it is illuminated pink for Breast Cancer awareness, and the beautiful caryatids are lit up.

If you have some architectural features or interior features of note, then this shows how these can be successfully highlighted with coloured light.
